Eucharistic “liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; at the same time it is the font from which all Her power flows” (Sacrosanctum Concilium 10). The Eucharist is the foundational sacrament of the Church because it is the partaking of "the one bread and the one cup" which unites the many members of the Church into the one Body and Blood of Christ: “Even as this broken bread was scattered over the hills, and was gathered together from the ends of the earth into Your kingdom” (Didache 10).

The Eucharist is also the culmination of the Christian life because it is there that we meet Jesus, substantially present—Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity—under the appearance of bread and wine and which makes present the Paschal Mystery of Christ’s suffering, death and resurrection. Just like the disciples, whose hearts burned within them as they walked to Emmaus, it is in the Breaking of Bread that we most tangibly meet our Lord.
